Overview of Programs and Courses Offered for the 2025/26 School Year

READING COMPREHENSION, WRITING AND PUBLIC SPEAKING ENRICHMENT PROGRAM

GRADES: 2-3, 4, 5-6 AND 7-8
PROGRAM format: available ONLINE AND IN-PERSON AT MARKHAM, MISSISSAUGA AND NORTH YORK CAMPUSES
COST: $2,000 | SEPTEMBER 2025 TO JUNE 2026

At Power of Words Academy, we offer a comprehensive enrichment program in reading comprehension, writing, and public speaking for students in Grades 2-8. This program runs throughout the school year from September to June, with classes held once a week for 1.5 hours. The curriculum consists of three key units:

  • Reading Comprehension and Summarizing Unit: Students will learn to analyze texts and extract main ideas and key details.

  • Writing Unit: Participants will gain insights into the structure of various essay types, including expository, persuasive, comparative, and research essays.

  • Public Speaking and Debate Unit: Students will learn how to write and deliver effective speeches while developing their debate skills.

Additionally, each class includes 20 minutes dedicated to the fundamental building blocks of writing, such as vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structure. Students will engage in mini-lessons and utilize the Language Power Now workbooks during this segment. A deposit of $100 is required upon registration, with a remaining fee of $1,900 payable in four installments throughout the school year.

At Power of Words Academy, we are excited to introduce our Power of Early Reading and Writing Program, specifically designed for students in Senior Kindergarten, Grade 1 and Grade 2. This comprehensive program operates throughout the school year, with classes held once a week for 45 minutes, ensuring a consistent and supportive learning experience.

With a favorable teacher-student ratio of 1:6, your child will receive personalized attention from experienced educators certified by the Ontario College of Teachers, using research-based Science of Reading pedagogy. Our intensive instruction focuses on foundational reading and writing skills, employing evidence-based strategies tailored for young learners. Regular assessments will monitor each student’s progress, ensuring they develop essential literacy skills for future success.

ENGLISH PREP COURSE FOR ENTRANCE EXAM [SSAT, ISEE, UTS, IB, TOPS, MACS]

COST: $700 | SEPTEMBER TO NOVEMBER 2024

Join our 8-week English Prep Course to prepare your child for success in the SSAT and ISEE exams, focusing on the verbal, reading, and essay components. Students will become familiar with the types of questions in the verbal and reading comprehension sections, while learning effective strategies for solving each question type under timed conditions. We will also tackle critical test-taking strategies and time management skills to help maximize their scores.

The course provides access to proven resources to enhance vocabulary—crucial for substantial score improvement—and prepares students for the English components of MaCS, TOPs, IB, and more.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP COURSE

GRADES: 7-9
COURSE Format: available ONLINE OR IN-PERSON AT OUR NORTH YORK CAMPUS
COST: $750 | SEPTEMBER 2024 TO February 2025

This 14-week course introduces students in Grades 7 to 9 to Business English through interactive lessons led by qualified teachers. With a maximum class size of 12 students, this course is delivered via Zoom and Google Classroom for virtual attendees while also being offered in-person at our North York Campus. The curriculum encompasses three units:

  • Business Letters: Students will learn effective business communications by writing letters from various perspectives, building their confidence in professional writing.

  • Report Writing: This unit will guide students through the fundamentals of report writing while engaging with concepts in sales, marketing, and entrepreneurship, culminating in common report writing assignments based on their own created “business.”

  • Presentation Tools and Skills: As part of real-world business, students will create and promote sales and marketing campaigns for their “companies.” Additionally, students will develop essential technological skills to enhance their presentations.

As a capstone project, students will present their product to the world, integrating all elements of the course, including an in-person oral presentation and a website for their business.

PREPARATION FOR GRADE 9 ENGLISH COURSE

GRADES: 7-8
COURSE Format: AVAILABLE ONLINE OR IN-PERSON AT NORTH YORK CAMPUS
COST: $750 | FEBRUARY TO JUNE 2025

This 14-week course is designed to equip students in Grades 6 to 8 with the essential skills needed for success in the Grade 9 English Curriculum. Led by qualified teachers, the interactive classes maintain a maximum size of 12 students, allowing for personalized attention. The program will be offered both virtually using the Zoom Platform and Google Classroom, and in-person at our North York and Mississauga campuses.

The course will cover various units to provide a solid foundation in each strand of the English curriculum that students will encounter in Grade 9. The curriculum includes:

  • Short Stories: Students will explore three short stories, analyzing elements such as plot, theme, and character development.

  • Novel Study: A short novel will be assigned at the beginning of the course, which will serve as the focal point for this unit. Students will engage in analysis specific to novels, culminating in an Independent Study Unit (ISU) that includes both written and oral components.

  • Poetry: This unit will introduce students to figurative language and analysis, enriching their understanding of poetic concepts.

  • Advanced Essay Writing: Building on skills taught in previous Power of Words courses, this unit will guide students in writing a Literary Essay of 500-600 words on topics related to the novel studied in the second unit.

Additionally, the ISU will provide students with the opportunity to choose from a selection of novels. Their ISU will involve activities such as:

  • Summary notes detailing plot, character development, and themes.

  • A creative poem illustrating a theme found in their chosen novel.

  • An interactive class activity that teaches peers something about their selected novel.

  • An oral presentation to highlight key insights from their chosen work.
