SYNOPSIS OF 2025 SUMMER CAMPS
Creative Writing / Drama
Ages: 7-14
sessions: full day and half day options
COST for 1 week in-person camp: full day [$500] or half day [$275]
Cost for 2 week Virtual camp: half day [$500]
This camp is an active and engaging week of creativity for kids, building their story writing skills along with their confidence in performing for an audience! The teacher-camper ratio is 1:6.
Creative Writing: Campers will create and publish their own books! Campers will work together with the teachers to choose themes and content they are inspired and excited by. The teachers will take students through the planning, writing and editing stages of creating their own narrative story. At the end of the week, the campers will receive digital and print copies of their books!
Drama Using Tech: In the afternoon, the program helps kids build their confidence, as well as public speaking, leadership, teamwork, and collaboration skills. This session of the camp uses storytelling and role playing. The kids work in groups to create a talk show or documentary on a topic of interest to them. They will record green screen videos and learn to edit and produce their videos. At the end of the week, the campers will receive digital copies of their productions. This camp is for all aspiring young students, from the shy and reserved to the keen and confident speakers!
Creative Writing / Debate

Debate: Campers are provided with opportunities to advocate for an idea, form a response, and speak on a point through impromptu public speaking games, debate feuds and formal debate rounds. Kids gain confidence, build resilience and develop effective collaboration skills. Campers participate in one debate round daily and receive constructive feedback from the teacher, with the intent to advance their delivery and critical thinking skills. This camp is for all aspiring young students, from the shy and reserved to the keen and confident speakers!
* Before and after camp care is only available at our North York Campus (for $10/day). For campers enrolled in before/after camp care program, morning drop off starts at 8:30 AM and afternoon pickup ends at 5:30 pm.

Enrichment Writing Course
GRADES: 2-3 | 4-5 | 6-8
session: July 9 to august 22, 2024
COST: $800/14 SESSIONS
Virtual Campus: CLASSES ON Tues AND Thurs 6:00 pm-7:30 pm
North York Campus: Classes on Tues and Thurs 4:30 pm-6:00 pm
This course is designed for students who have not taken the Power of Words Academy School Year Enrichment Writing and Public Speaking program.
A maximum of 12 students are in a class, and the virtual courses are delivered using the Zoom Platform and Google Classroom. The lessons are led by teachers, are interactive and aligned with the common core standards of the Ontario School Curriculum. Students learn to:
Generate, gather and organize ideas and information to write for an intended purpose and audience.
Draft and revise their writing using a variety of informational, literary and graphic forms
Use editing, proofreading, and knowledge of language conventions to correct errors, refine expression, and present their work effectively.
Reflect on and identify their strengths as writers, areas for improvement, and strategies they found most helpful at different stages of the writing process.
Students learn the structure of writing four types of essays (expository, persuasive, comparative and contrast, and research), develop critical thinking skills and learn to add depth to their writing pieces.
Public Speaking Course
GRADES: 2-3 | 4-5 | 6-8
SESSION: JULY 8 TO AUGUST 26, 2024

NORTH YORK CAMPUS: CLASSES ON MON AND WED 4:30 pm-6:00 pm
This introductory public speaking course is designed for students who have not taken the Power of Words Academy School Year Enrichment Writing and Public Speaking program.
A maximum of 12 students are in a class, and the virtual courses will be delivered using the Zoom Platform and Google Classroom. The students will receive binders by mail with the weekly notes and worksheets.
At Power of Words, we recognize that oral communication skills are fundamental to student participation in any learning environment. In addition to designing this course specifically on public speaking, where students will write and present their speeches in a mock setting, we have incorporated learning activities throughout the curriculum to build confident and powerful speakers.
This course is designed to boost your child's self-esteem and confidence. It focuses on building the student’s presentation strategies, effectively using vocal skills (including tone, pitch, volume and pace), incorporating non-verbal cues (including facial impressions, gestures and eye contact) and communicating clearly and coherently.
English Prep Course for Entrance Exam
[SSAT, ISEE, UTS, IB]
GRADES: 5-7
SESSION: JULY 10 TO AUGUST 28, 2024
COST: $700 | 8-SESSION COURSE
north york Campus: CLASSES ON wed 6:00 pm-8:00 pm
This course will familiarize your child with all aspects of the SSAT and ISEE exams, focusing on the test's verbal, reading, and essay components.
Students will learn all the types of questions they will face in the verbal and reading comprehension sections. Strategies for solving each type of question will be clearly explained, followed up with plenty of opportunities to practice each type of question under timed conditions. Students will learn critical SSAT/ISEE test-taking strategies and time management skills that will help them maximize their test scores.
This course will provide access to proven resources that can build the student’s vocabulary, which is crucial if you want to improve your score substantially. It will also help your child prepare for the English component for MaCS, TOPs, IB etc.
Preparation for Grade 9 English Course
GRADES: 7-8
session: July 9 to august 22, 2024
COST: $800/14 SESSIONS
Virtual Campus: CLASSES ON Tues AND Thurs 6:00 pm-7:30 pm
This course is designed to give students in Grades 7 and 8 the fundamental skills required for success in the Grade 9 English Curriculum.
The course will incorporate units of study, providing a foundation in each strand of the English curriculum which students will encounter in Grade 9 English. The course comprises of four units:
Short Stories - Three short stories will be covered during this part of the course. Each story is designed to cover the elements of plot, theme and character.
Novel Study - A short novel will be assigned at the beginning of the course, which will be the focus of this unit. The analysis of the novel will cover the elements particular to a novel as distinct from a short story. This unit will culminate in an Independent Study Unit, which includes written and oral components.
Poetry - This part of the course will cover figurative language and analysis concepts.
Advanced Essay Writing - Building on skills taught in previous POW courses, this unit will teach skills specific to writing a Literary Essay of 500-600 words. The Essay will be written on topics related to the novel studied in Unit 2.
In addition, an Independent Study Unit (ISU) will be introduced at the beginning of the course. A choice of novels will be offered to students. Their ISU will include the following activities related to the novel students have chosen:
Summary notes on plot, character and theme
A poem to illustrate a theme found in their chosen novel
An activity to involve the class which teaches students something about the novel
An oral presentation to the class to highlight their chosen novel
